This cryptic, side view of an elephant was painted with cold wax mixed into the paint. The thick impasto and rough marks gives the picture an almost sculptural physicality, mimicking the texture of the surface of an elephant. I spent many months photographing elephants in India and Africa, culminating in two books published by Thames and Hudson: Elephant! and Elephants - A Book for Children. This scene is derived from reference photographs I took in Savute, Botswana.
