This man was sitting at a table outside Angela's restaurant in Margate, where Kathy and I were recently enjoying lunch. The subtle distortions in the clear glass, intense sky and the luminosity of the bottle were quite magical. I'd seen two powerful exhibitions that week: Walter Sickert and Tracey Emin. I was inspired by Sickert's edgy, dark paintings and Emin's intense existential honesty.
