Horrified by the images of the bombing of a maternity hospital in Mariupol, I was motivated to paint this as a global reminder to what motherhood is meant to be - nurturing and providing. I used the predominate blue and yellow colours of The Ukrainian flag - strong complimentary colours, with an almost sculptural carved look and cubist planes to emphasize maternal strength.
