I have always had an affection for elephants, so physically different from us yet so similar in temperament. I spent many months photographing elephants in India and Africa, culminating in two books published by Thames and Hudson: Elephant! and Elephants - A Book for Children. This imagined scene is derived from reference photographs I took in Savute, Botswana. The paint is thick, almost like the mud itself, sitting proudly in relief on the canvas.
