While working on my book, Living Africa (Thames & Hudson), I went down a gold mine near Johannesburg. It was humbling to see how hard the Mozambiquan migrant miners work and he arduous conditions they endure. This is an interpretation of a photograph I took 3km underground, in total darkness save for the lamp on his head and my camera’s flash. The heat and noise were intense.
